YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting started his career as a lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from 1974 to 1980. He was subsequently promoted as an associate professor at the faculty until 1987. Between 1979 to 1986, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting published two books entitled “Konsep Asas Sosiologi” and “Hubungan Ras dan Etnik”. He also advocated on issues affecting the Chinese community, particularly on education and culture.
In 1987, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting ventured into politics with his election as a Member of Parliament for the Gopeng constituency, which he held until the 2008 general elections. Between this tenure, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting had served as Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Health (1988-1989), Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (1989-1990), Minister of Housing and Local Government (1990-1999) and Secretary-General of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) (1990-2005).
Currently, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting is the advisor for Good Morning Global Sdn Bhd, Trans Elite Group Sdn Bhd and TCC Construction Sdn Bhd. He is also actively contributing to public listed companies where he serves as the Chairman for Hua Yang Berhad , director of Sycal Ventures Berhad and Johan Holdings Berhad. On the education end, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting currently is the Chairman for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Council, a member of UTAR Board of Trustees and a board member UTAR Education Foundation. He previously served as a board member in Puncak Niaga Holdings Berhad ,Pan Malaysia Capital Berhad, Pan Malaysia Corporation Berhad, Pan Malaysia Holdings Berhad and HuaRen Educational Foundation.
YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Malaya in 1970 and obtained a Master of Science Degree from the University of London in 1972. He also holds a Doctorate in Philosophy, which he obtained from the University of Warwick in 1976. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Directors.
